One of the best reasons to install a fence is to give your home and yard some privacy. Even if you like your neighbors, it’s good to have a distinct barrier between your property and the sidewalk, street, or other yards.
The Classic Picket Fence
Some privacy fences are geared more toward delineating space and establishing a perimeter for those who shouldn’t be walking on your lawn. That’s what the classic picket fence does. Sometimes the fences are very low, but you can get picket fence panels that are taller. There’s space in between each picket, so you don’t have complete blockage in terms of people being able to see through the fence. But the pickets do make it harder for people to access your yard, giving you a semblance of privacy in your home.
The Solid, Vertical Fence
If you want the type of privacy where people can’t look into your yard at all, get a solid vertical fence made with wood or vinyl. There should be no spaces between the planks, and the top of the fence should meet the maximum height allowed by your HOA, city, or county. These are classic fences that are very good for yards in which you have dogs that you don’t want jumping over the fence.
The Living Fence
If you don’t want a solid structure that is unnatural but still want privacy — and you’re OK with some added structure — look into trellises and lattices. Install these as the panels for the fence and then let plants grow up and through them. Imagine having a wall of climbing roses or sweet potato vines surrounding your yard. You can add hedges, too, and hang planters on the fence panels as well.
The Temporarily Private Fence
If you have a chain-link fence around your yard and want to block the view, you can find strips that you weave throughout the fence as well as panels that you attach to the metal. These all block most of the view through the chain-link sections. These aren’t going to be perfect, but they are easy to install, don’t require that you remove or replace the chain-link, and are easy to remove when you’re done with them.
The Double-Layer Fence
A trick you can use to make your existing fence a lot more effective in blocking some sounds is to add some sort of double layer. A lot of people do this by adding hedges or dense stands of trees next to the fence they have, but you can also add a second layer of fence to the existing fence. That will provide more privacy and peace.
The Stone Wall Fence
Finally, who said a fence had to be a thin layer of wood, metal, or vinyl? Do you want something that will really block the view into your yard? Go for a stone wall. It looks rustic but fashionable and will last for years. No bug issues here, and UV rays from the hot summer sun won’t do much other than possibly fade the colors (as UV rays do to so many other materials). The stone can withstand a lot of what nature throws at it, too. The one drawback is that it’s more difficult to remove and repair than a wood or metal fence.
